Welcome to MEMORY MAKER CHARTERS of Homer, Alaska located on beautiful
Kachemak Bay off Lower Cook Inlet. We feature one of Alaska's newest
fishing boats, the 35' MEMORY MAKER by Seawolf Marine.
The professional combination of the following elements will help to
ensure YOUR HALIBUT CHARTER, a trip of a lifetime.
WELCOME ABOARD!
A typical day starts at 6:30am* in Slip G-13 of the Homer Small Boat
Harbor - which is located between El Pescador Restaurant and Coal
Point Trading see map. *The meeting time will vary a bit through the
season due to tides and "fish bites" but we will confirm departure
times the day before your charter. The MEMORY MAKER can comfortably
take up to 6 passengers per charter and every trip is a sightseeing
tour. That is one of the reasons the MEMORY MAKER is designed with
360° visibility from the cabin....one is never sure which direction
the whale will breech or the sea otter is floating.
We will ask for your fishing license as it must be recorded into our
log book. We will also ask if you would like to purchase a HOMER JACKPOT
HALIBUT DERBY TICKET, which is $10 PER FISHERMAN. There are numerous
cash prizes, and the big halibut last year won over $45,000!
After a safety orientation, we will be underway to the fishing
grounds. Depending on the tides and time of the season, we will travel
anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours. The MEMORY MAKER is a fast
vessel, so we will keep travel time to a minimum so you can enjoy more
time fishing. Remember this is YOUR charter, so just alert the Captain when
you wish to take photos.
Once we are on location we will have a quick review of the gear and
tackle operation (if you are not a seasoned fisher person....do not
worry, we will take time to make sure you are comfortable with the
equipment and then we will be a character witness when you out-fish
the "old salts".) Sharing our knowledge with a "first timer" is
something we enjoy.

HALIBUT are caught from shallow (20-30 ft) to deep (over 400 ft) of
water. The average sport caught halibut weighs approximately 25 - 30
pounds, although triple digit (over 100 pounds) are not uncommon, and
a 352 pounder won the Homer Halibut Derby in 2004. The limit for
halibut is 2 per day. We will typically be fishing in 120 to 180 feet
of water using high quality reliable two speed SHIMANO reels with new
technology line (Spectra) and stand up LAMIGLASS rods that will fit
easily into a fishing belt and harness when the big one is hooked.
Harnesses are provided on board for your comfort. We will tie all
terminal tackle, bait and re-bait as necessary to keep the action
going. You will soon get the "feel" of a bite, and learn how to "set
your hook"! You have the choice of jigging or fishing with bait,
both are fun and very productive. We promote CPR, catching,
photographing, and releasing!
We will return to the dock about 4:30pm. We will be met by a
professional fish filleting business known as the Buttwackers. We have
a business alliance with them to fillet your fish. They will take the
fish from the boat and hang them for additional photo ops, if you
wish, prior to filleting. Once filleted you may decide to take the
fish and transport or process yourself, or have it done commercially
(this is your option and is not included in the price of the charter).
We recommend Coal Point Trading Co. to package, quick freeze and ship
(shipments can be arranged to arrive at your destination on
predetermined date). Buttwackers will call Coal Point to transport
your catch to Coal Point Trading Co. if you choose the commercial
option. The day comes to a close with the reflection that this time
with your family, friends, and business associates will generate
numerous stories (probably a few might get slightly exaggerated
through the years) and a host of photos to share and remind you of the
adventure. It is our desire that the trip provide your group with life
enriching memories and a fierce desire to count the days for a return
trip to enjoy with your new friends at MEMORY MAKER CHARTERS.
